More than 500 international observers expected to monitor parliamentary elections in Tajikistan

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan’s Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) says more than 500 international observers are expected to monitor parliamentary elections in Tajikistan this year.

Tajikistan has officially applied to nations, CIS Executive Committee, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Parliamentary Assembly and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to send their observers to Dushanbe to monitor the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 1.

Besides, about 1,000 local observers are expected to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country, an official source within the CCER told Asia-Plus in an interview.

In 2015, 525 international observers monitored the parliamentary elections in Tajikistan, including 175 observers from the CIS nations, 35 observers from the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and 167 observers from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the source added.
