Cargo shipments by rail reportedly increase in Tajikistan

Over the first seven months of this year, all types of transportation shipped more than 46.4 million tons of cargo, according to the Agency for Statistics under the Government of Tajikistan. 

Over the reporting period, the shipment of cargo by automotive transportation has reportedly fallen 2.2 percent and amounted to 42.9 million tons.

Meanwhile, the shipment of cargo by rail over the same seven-month period has increased by 15.6 percent, reaching nearly 3.6 million tons.  

Cargo shipments by air have fallen 42 percent over the first seven months of this year and amounted to only 400 tons. 

Compared to January-July last year, carriage of passengers by all types of transportation has reportedly fallen 9 percent over the reporting period.  Only 354 million passengers have been carried in January-July this year.  

Compared to the same period last year, carriage of passengers by automotive transportation has fallen 9 percent, carriage of passengers by rail has fallen 2.15 percent, carriage of passengers by air has fallen by 61.9 percent, and carriage of passengers by electric transportation has fallen 5.2 percent.

Recall, Tajik authorities have suspended all international flights.  Tajikistan closed all its airports at midnight on March 19-20 due to the coronavirus concerns.  Only charters flights to repatriate Tajik nationals stranded in foreign countries due to the coronavirus crisis have been operated so far.  international cargo shipments have also been carried out without any restrictions.
