Azim Ibrohim appointed to head Tajikistan’s National Commission on TRACECA Issues

Azim Ibrohim has been appointed Chairman of Tajikistan’s National Commission on the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) Issues, according to Ministry of Transport (MoT) press center.     

Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda has nominated Azim Ibrohim’s candidacy to this position and resident Emomali Rahmon has reportedly supported it.     

TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) is an international transport program involving the European Union and 12 member States of the Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian region.  The program aim is to strengthen economic relations, trade and transport in the regions of the Black Sea basin, South Caucasus and Central Asia.  It has a permanent Secretariat, originally financed by the European Commission, in Baku, Azerbaijan, and a regional office in Odessa, Ukraine.  Since 2009 the organization has been entirely financed by member countries.

TRACECA was established in May 1993 in Brussels, upon the signing of a Multilateral Agreement on International Transport for the development of transport initiatives (including the establishment and development of a road corridor) between the EU member states, the Caucasus and Central Asian countries.  The program supports the political and economic independence of the former Soviet Union republics through enhancing their access to European and global markets through road, rail and sea.  The objectives of TRACECA were underlined by the Baku Initiative of 2004, followed by a further ministerial conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2006.

Recall, Azim Ibrohim, who had previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, was appointed as the new Minister of Transport on August 31, 2020, replacing Khudoyor Khudoyorzoda.

Azim Ibrohim was born in the Mir Said Ali Hamadoni (formerly Moskva district) of the Khatlon province on March 1, 1962.  He graduated from the Tashkent Technical University in 1984.  He has scientific degree of Candidate of Sciences in Geology.       

Azim Ibrohim served as Deputy Prime Minister from November 23, 2013 to August 31, 2020.  Prior to this he served as Head of the Main Geology Directorate under the Government of Tajikistan from 2005 to November 23, 2013. In 2004-2005, Azim Ibrohim was Head of Dushanbe’s Sino District.  In 2002-2004, he was Deputy Minister of Industry.  From 1995 to 2002, Azim Ibrohim served as Frist Deputy Head of the Committee on Precious Metals.
