Wage arrears continuing to rise in Tajikistan

Given the previous years, wage arrears in Tajikistan reached more than 74.8 million somoni (equivalent to some 7.2 million U.S. dollars) as of September this year, according the Agency for Statistics under President of Tajikistan. 

In August alone, employers did not pay a total of more than 1 million U.S. dollars of wages to employees.

Over the first eight months of this year, employers have reportedly owed their employees more than 40.4 million somoni (equivalent to nearly 4 million U.S. dollars).

The highest wage arrears were reported in April (15.1 million somoni) and August (10.8 million somoni).  

Growth in wage arrears has been reported practically in all sectors.  

The highest wage arrears have been reported in the processing industry – 21.8 million somoni.

It is followed by construction sector (19.3 million somoni), mining sector (14.8 million somoni) and transportation sector (8.7 million somoni).

Wage arrears in education and health sectors have amounted to 984,000 somoni and 324,000 somoni respectively.  

It is to be noted that coronavirus pandemic has negatively affected many sectors of the country’s economy, and as a result, employers have failed to pay wages to their employees on time and in full volume.  

In August, an average monthly nominal wage in Tajikistan amounted to 1,256 somoni (equivalent to 122 U.S. dollars). 

Tajikistan's minimum wage is 400.00 somoni per month.

In Tajikistan, the highest average monthly wage has been reported in the financial sector – 3,362 somoni.

The lowest average monthly wage has been reported in the agrarian sector – 554 somoni.     

According to data of the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee (CIS STAT), Tajikistan has the lowest wages among CIS member nations.  

The highest average monthly wage in the CIS area is reported in Russia – equivalent to 730 U.S. dollars.  

The average salary in Belarus is equal to 518 U.S. dollars, in Ukraine – 388 U.S. dollars, in Azerbaijan – 370 U.S. dollars, in Armenia – 375 U.S. dollars, and in Kyrgyzstan – 239 U.S. dollars.  

Data for Kazakhstan, Moldova and Uzbekistan are not available.
