Economic entities to reimburse over TJS 442.2 million to the Tajik government to service external debt

Asia-Plus

The national budget for 2021 notes that economic entities will have to reimburse more than 442.2 million somonis (TJS) next year to service the country’s external debt.

These funds reportedly include financial obligations of enterprises under sub-loan agreements for 2021, without taking into account arrears for previous years.

Through a sub-loan agreement, the government borrows funds to finance certain needs of economic entities, which will service these debts.  The government acts in this process as borrower or guarantor.

The list includes six economic entities, which will have to reimburse more than TJS 442.2 million (equivalent to some 40 million U.S. dollars) next year to service the country’s external debt: 1) Open Joint-Stock Holding Company Barqi Tojik (Tajik national power utility company) – 398.2 million somonis; 2) State Unitary Enterprise Dushanbe Vodokanal (VDK – municipal waterworks) – about 6.2 million somonis; 3) State Unitary Enterprise Tajik Railways (Tajik state-run railways company) – 19.6 million somonis; 4) Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) Tojiktransgazi (Tajik state-run natural gas distributor) – more than 3.2 million somonis; 5) OJSC Dushanbe International Airport – more than 9.9 million somonis; and 6) OJSC Pamir Energy – more than 4.9 million somonis.

As of October 1, 2020, Tajikistan’s external debt reportedly amounted to 3.163 billion U.S. dollars, according to the Ministry of Finance.
