Prices for basic food products have been rising in Tajikistan. Local experts attribute increase in prices for food products to rise in the exchange rate of the dollar in exporting countries and a decrease in food imports due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Other experts talk about a similar situation around the whole world.
Thus, Vasily Uzun, chief researcher at the RANEPA Center for Agri-Food Policy, Doctor of Sciences in Economics, said on the air of NSN that the world will face a record rise in food prices in the near future.
“Due to the pandemic, revenues have fallen by more than ten percent, food is becoming more expensive, this trend continues for 2021. The world is approaching the highest food prices in all crises. In the category of poor citizens, already 50 percent of income goes to food,” he said.
In Tajikistan, prices for basic food products are rising day by day. Back in mid-November the price for one kilogram of beef in Dushanbe was 53 somonis, the price for one egg was 1.00 somoni and the price for one liter of vegetable oil was 16 somonis.
It was the vegetable oil, both local cooking (cotton-seed) oil and imported sunflower-seed oil, that went up the most in Tajikistan recently. Thus, current price for one liter of the imported sunflower-seed oil is 20 somonis.
And this is how the prices for basic food products looked in Tajikistan in the first week of December:
Lamb, price for 1 kg: 55 somonis in Dushanbe; 43 somonis in Murgab (GBAO); 65 somonis in Istaravshan (Sughd province); average price – 55 somonis.
Beef, price for 1 kg: 55 somonis in Dushanbe; 42 somonis in Murgab; and 60 somonis in Tursunzoda and Istaravshan; average price – 52 somonis.
Cooking (cotton-seeding) oil, price for 1 liter: 17.50 somonis in Dushanbe; 19 somonis in Murgab; 17 somonis in Rasht; average price – 17.80 somonis.
Imported vegetable oil, price for 1 liter: 18.80 somonis in Dushanbe; 18 somonis in Rasht; 20 somonis in Khujand and Tursunzoda; average price – 19 somonis.
Milk, price for 1 liter: 5 somonis in Dushanbe; 3.30 somonis in Istaravshan; 6 somonis in Khorog and Murgab; average price – 4.40 somonis.
First grade wheat flour, price for 1 kg: 5 somonis in Dushanbe; 4.70 somonis in Istaravshan; 5.80 somonis in Murgab; average price – 5.15 somonis.
Rice, price for 1 kg: 15 somonis in Dushanbe; 11 somonis in Istaravshan; 23 somonis in Murgab; average price – 14.95 somonis.
Sugar, price for 1 kg: 9 somonis in Dushanbe; 11 somonis in Murgab; average price – 9.63 somonis.
Eggs, price for 1 piece: 1.13 somonis in Dushanbe; 1.10 somonis in Istaravshan; 1.50 somonis in Murgab; average price 1.22 somonis.
Cabbages, price for 1 kg: 2 somonis in Dushanbe; 1.50 somonis in Tursunzoda; 6 somonis in Murgab; average price – 2.88 somonis.
Potatoes, price for 1 kg: 3.50 somonis in Dushanbe; 2.80 somonis in Rasht and Shahriston; 6 somonis in Murgab; average price – 2.35 somonis.
Onions, price for 1 kg: 2.20 somonis in Dushanbe; 1.60 somonis in Istaravshan; 3.50 somonis in Murgab; average price – 2.35 somonis.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, the cost of products of the food industry in January-October has reportedly increased on average by 9.6 percent.
