Over the last four months of last year, Tajikistan reportedly increased electrical power supplies to neighboring countries step-by-step by nearly 80 percent.
Tajikistan reportedly supplied more than US$1.9 million worth of electricity to neighboring countries in September, about US$2 million worth of electricity in October, more than US$2.7 million worth of electricity in November and nearly US$3.4 million worth of electricity in December.
Last year, Tajikistan generated a total of US$56.4 million worth of electricity, which is 40 percent fewer than in 2019, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.
Meanwhile in Tajikistan itself, residential customers in rural areas now have no electricity from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. due to power rationing that was reintroduced in the country on January 5.
A source at the Barqi Tojik utility company says the restrictions are a result of levels at the Nurek hydropower dam dropping to four meters below what they were at the same period last year.
The government had not been compelled to limit how much power it supplies to households since the winter of 2016.
In 2020, Tajikistan reportedly generated about 19.8 billion kWh of electricity, which is 4.4 percent or 906 million kWh fewer than in 2019.
