Tajik health authorities claim that the coronavirus statistics have not changed in the country over the past weekends.
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population (MoHSPP) claims that no new coronavirus-linked deaths were reported in Tajikistan on Saturday and Sunday.
As of the morning of January 18, 2021, the official number of people infected with the coronavirus remains unchanged in Tajikistan – 13,308.
Thus, no new officially confirmed coronavirus cases were reported in Tajikistan on December 31, January 1, 3 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.
The official number of coronavirus-linked deaths also remains the same in the country as of the morning of January 18 – 90, a MoHSPP says.
The number of the cured COVID-19 patients reportedly remains the same as well — 13,218.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Tajikistan is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have spread to Tajikistan when its index cases, in Dushanbe and Khujand, were confirmed on April 30, 2020.
Meanwhile, Eurasianet reported on January 14 that the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations across Central Asia is set to be slow and far from exhaustive.
The overall epidemiological picture in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan looks generally rosy in relative terms, though, if compared to the disasters that have befallen many Western European countries, not to speak of the United States and Russia.
As of mid-January, there were reportedly around 11,500 active cases in Kazakhstan. As for Uzbekistan, authorities are currently claiming to have only about 900 active cases – a drop in the ocean for a population of more than 33 million. Uzbekistan has even been closing facilities created specifically to cope with the COVID-19 crisis, Eurasianet said, noting that the credibility of such upbeat assessments is difficult to confirm or disprove, however.
Tajikistan has reportedly gone further yet in claiming victory over COVID-19. Dushanbe still plans to pursue a vaccination program. The Tajik government has made a request for 1.8 million doses of vaccine through the COVAX initiative, a Health Ministry source told Eurasianet. “For us, the main condition for the purchase of vaccines is that it be recognized by the World Health Organization and that it can be transported to Tajikistan,” the source said.
The virus is reportedly affecting 219 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
Coronavirus cases around the globe have been reported at 95,484,666 since China reported its first cases to the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019, Worldometer said today morning (04:49 GMT). Of them, 68,170,260 have recovered and 2,039,695 have died.
