Tajikistan last year imported about 900,000 tons of wheat at an average rate of US$243.00 per one ton and 90,000 tons of wheat flour at an average rate of US$261.00 per one ton, according to the Antimonopoly Agency under the Government of Tajikistan.  Compared to 2019, wheat flour imports last year increased by 19.1 percent and flour imports last year increased by 4.8 percent.

Kazakhstan provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s wheat and flour imports.  Last year, Kazakhstan accounted for 94 percent of Tajikistan’s wheat imports and nearly 95 percent of flour imports.

Tajikistan itself reportedly produced 864,000 tons of wheat and more than 830,000 tons of wheat flour in 2020.

Current Tajikistan’s requirements in wheat flour are approximately 1.2 million tons.

According to the Agency or Statistics udder the President of Tajikistan, bakery product rose in cost 14 percent during the last year.

The Antimonopoly Agency says the price hike has resulted from the rising prices of wheat and wheat flour in exporting countries.

Meanwhile, over the past five years, an average price for a 50-kilogram of grade I wheat flour has risen 40 percent – from 170.00 somonis in 2016 to 240.00 somonis.

In 2018 and early 2019, an average price for a 50-kilogram of grade I wheat flour was 190.00 somonis.
