33 cases of juvenile suicide were officially registered in the southern Khatlon province last year, which was nine cases more than in 2019, the deputy chief of the Khatlon Education Directorate, Ms. Malika Shukurzoda, told reporters in Bokhtar, the capital of Khatlon province, on February 5.
“Most cases of the juvenile suicide were reported in Vakhsh district – 4,” said Shukurzoda. “” Levaknat, Kuroson, Qubodiyon, Kulob and Shahritous reported three cases each; Vose, Temourmalik, Farkhor, Kushoniyon and Khovaling districts reported two cases each; and Dousti, Panj, Balkhi and Nosir-Khusrav districts reported one case each.”
According to her, each case was analyzed separately with the involvement of teachers, parents and classmates.
The main causes of the juvenile suicide in the province are family conflicts and mental diseases. The cause of suicide is unknown in some cases and the law enforcement authorities are continuing to investigate these cases,” Shukurzoda said.
She noted that the education authorities of the province are seriously concerned over the increase in the number of cases of juvenile suicide in Khatlon and have organized special working groups to carry out explanatory work among school students, their parents and teachers.
Meanwhile, Khatlon chief prosecutor’s office says that in all, 149 cases of suicide were reported in the province last year, which is six cases fewer than in 2019. Only 29 of them were reportedly committed by minors.
