Asia-Plus

Two peaks located in the western part of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) has been renamed.

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Olimjon Muhammadjonzoda, the head of the Committee on Language and Terminology, noted on February 17 that Korzhenevskoi Peak has been renamed Ozodi Peak and Ozodi Peak has been renamed Sangtalak.

Korzhenevskoi Peak is the third highest peak in the Pamir Mountains.  It is one of the five "Snow Leopard Peaks" in the territory of the former Soviet Union.  It is named after Evgenia Korzhenevskaya, the wife of Russian geographer Nikolai L. Korzhenevskiy, who discovered the peak in August 1910.

As far as Ozodi peak is concerned, mountaineers from the CIS member nations made the first ascent of unmanned mountain 6,230 meters in GBAO in 2009 and it was named Ozodi (Freedom) Peak.

Muhammadjonzoda also told reporters that Shahrituz district in Khatlon province was renamed Sharitous district last year.

According to him, the Committee on Language and Terminology last year considered 844 non-standard names of settlements and prepared draft resolutions on renaming them.
