Tajikistan plans to increase electricity deliveries to Afghanistan eight times this year, says Barqi Tojik head

Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national power utility company) has concluded agreements with energy companies of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan on the supply of electricity to these countries this year during spring-summer period.

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Mahmadumar Asozoda, the first deputy head of Barqi Tojik, noted on February 17 that this year, Tajikistan will supply 1.5 billion kWh of electricity to Uzbekistan.

According to him, Tajikistan stopped delivering electricity to Uzbekistan in autumn because diminished river levels constrained output at the Nurek hydropower plant.  “Tajikistan will resume electricity deliveries to Uzbekistan with the onset of a sufficient inflow of water into the Vakhsh River,” Barqi Tojik official noted.

As far as electricity deliveries to Afghanistan are concerned, Asozoda said they plan to increase electricity deliveries to Afghanistan eight times this year starting from April.

Tajikistan is currently supplying minimum electricity only to Afghanistan in order keep the power transmission lines connected.

“Tajikistan is currently delivering up to 1.2 million kWh of electricity to Afghanistan.  It is about 2.5 percent of the total volume of electricity currently generated in Tajikistan,” Asozoda said, noting that Afghanistan pays at the rate of 3.0 cent per 1 kWh of Tajik electricity supplied via the 110 kV power transmission line and at the rate of 4.5 cent per 1kWh of Tajik electricity supplied via the 220 kV power transmission line.

Recall, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma told reporters in Dushanbe on February 1 that the country’s electricity exports last year reduced by 48 percent compared to 2019.

According to data from Barqi Tojik, Tajikistan last year generated a total of 19,770,500,000 kWh of electricity.  Of this amount, 1,528,400,000 kWh of electricity was supplied to the neighboring countries.

Compared to 2019, last year’s power generation in Tajikistan reportedly decreased by 905.7 million kWh.

Tajikistan plans to supply more than 3 billion kWh of electric power to neighboring countries this year.

Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.  Tajikistan is reportedly able to export up to 5 billion kWh of electricity during the summer period.
