The press center of the Border Guard Directorate at the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan says Kyrgyz servicemen opened fire at Tajik border guards in the area of the water distribution point Thursday afternoon.

“Servicemen of the Kyrgyz Republic opened fire at Tajik border guards today at 1:05 pm in the area of the “Golovnoy” water distribution point, which is located in the upper reaches of the Isfara River near Khojai Alo village in Chorkuh jamoat, which is subordinate to the Tajik northern city of Isfara,” Tajik Border Guard Directorate said in a statement released on April 29.

This incident occurred in light of the violation by the Kyrgyz side of the previously reached bilateral agreements and it makes attempts to illegally seize the “Golovnoy” water distribution point, the statement notes.

According to maps of 1924-1927 and 1989 this hydraulic facility is completely located in the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan; it was constructed in 1968 for the implementation of irrigation of farmlands in border districts of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, the statement said.

Citizens of Kyrgyzstan reportedly started shooting towards Tajikistan Thursday (April 29) morning

“At 10:45 am, resident of Somoniyon village, Oqil Amakov, 32, was wounded in the head.  HE was taken to the Isfara central city hospital.  His condition is assessed as severe.

“Another resident of Somoniyon village, Sattor Samadov, sustained wounds in his hand and leg and was taken to the Isfara central city hospital, Tajik border service said in its statement.

The Border Guard Directorate press center does not report any other persons sustaining shotgun wounds.

A source within the Isfara mayor’s office told Asia-Plus today morning that three residents of Somoniyon village with gunshot wounds have been taken to the Isfara central city hospital.

Asia-Plus reporter, who is currently in the Isfara central city hospital, says four other residents with gunshot wounds were taken to the Isfara hospital just now.  In all, eight persons with various injuries, mostly with gunshot wounds, have reportedly been taken to the Isfara hospital.

Meanwhile local residents say both sides are drawing military hardware and personnel over to the scene of the incident.
