On Monday May 24, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tajikistan Mr. Takayuki Miyashita together with Mr. Abdukholiq Kholiqzoda, Mayor of Panjakent City, attended the handover ceremony of successful completion of “The Project for Improvement of Drinking Water System in Loiq Sherali Jamoat, Panjakent City.” The ceremony was also attended by local officials and community members.
Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe says the project was implemented under the framework of Japan’s “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).”
The total grant amount of US$90,846 was reportedly provided to the local government of Panjakent City from the Government of Japan for installing 4-kilometer pipe aiming at improving access to safe drinking water for local residents of Bahor-1 village, Bahor-2 village, Ferma village and Mehrobod village.
Prior to the project implementation, when residents of four villages were unable to use clean drinking water, they often used canal water or rain water. Now, after the implementation of the project, these villages have an alternative source of clean drinking water and more than 3,600 people will use it.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Miyashita made the following remark “Safe and clean water is the key to the quality life. This project will supply safe and clean water from the source directly to the residents. This water supply system will also prevent residents from waterborne diseases and contribute to the quality life of this region. I hope this drinking water supply system will be well maintained by the local authority and by the local residents as well.”
The beneficiary organization and residents of the city expressed their sincere gratitude for the continuous assistance of the Japanese Government through this project that took place in the remote area of the country.

“Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project” (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout Tajikistan. Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs. As of today, GGP has supported 421 projects in the country, for which US$34.0 million has been allocated since 1996.
