Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday evening arrived in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat on a state visit that will last through August 6, according to the Tajik president’s official website.
The ministers of foreign affairs, economic development and trade, energy and water resources, transport and culture as well as heads of the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property Management and Tajik Railways (state-run railway company) and some other officials are reportedly accompanying Emomali Rahmon on his visit to Turkmenistan.
Today, Emomali Rahmon will hold talks with his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to discuss political, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between their countries.
The negotiations are expected to result in signing of a number of cooperation documents between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan last year reportedly valued at 40 million U.S. dollars.
Tajikistan’s imports from Turkmenistan mainly include petroleum products and liquefied natural gas while its exports to Turkmenistan mainly include primary aluminum and agricultural goods.
On August 6, Emomali Rahmon will participate in a Consultative Meeting of Leaders of Central Asia’s Nations.
Turkmenportal says six international events will take place at the National Tourist Zone “Avaza” on August 6: the Consultative Meeting of Leaders of Central Asia’s Nations; first Women Leaders' Dialogue in Central Asia; the Economic Forum; the International Exhibition and the Exhibition of Traditional Foods; and the Festive Concert of Renowned Central Asian Artists.
A number of bilateral meetings are expected to take part on the sidelines of these events, Turkmenportal noted.
According to the Tajik MFA, the diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were officially established on January 27, 1993 by signing of the Protocol "On the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan."
The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan has functioned in Ashgabat since February 1993. The Embassy of Turkmenistan operates in Dushanbe as well.
In general, the current state of the Tajik-Turkmen relations has a tendency of phased expansion. The process of practical implementation of the mutual desire of the two countries to work more closely in multi-dimensional cooperation in accordance with the potential and needs of the people reportedly can be seen in bilateral relations.
