British officials hold talks with the Taliban in Kabul

Diplomats from the United Kingdom have met with the Taliban government in Kabul.

The first talks between diplomatic officials from the United Kingdom and the Taliban took place in Kabul on Tuesday October 5. The UK’s special envoy to Afghanistan met senior Taliban leaders on Tuesday in their first visit back to Afghanistan since the Islamist group seized power at the end of August.

Deutsche Welle (DW) says the talks were held as the militant group was accused of committing "extrajudicial executions."

The UK Foreign Office said special envoy to Afghanistan Simon Gass and the British Embassy's Martin Longden met with the Taliban leaders to discuss the support Afghanistan needed as it battled a humanitarian crisis.

Reuters says British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's special envoy met Taliban leaders in Afghanistan to discuss the humanitarian crisis and ways to prevent the country from becoming an incubator for militants.

Simon Gass, Johnson's high representative for Afghanistan, reportedly met Taliban leaders including Amir Khan Muttaqi, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Abdul Salam Hanafi.

According to the UK Foreign Office, they "discussed how the UK could help Afghanistan to address the humanitarian crisis, the importance of preventing the country from becoming an incubator for terrorism, and the need for continued safe passage for those who want to leave the country."

They reportedly also raised the treatment of minorities and the rights of women and girls.

Gass was accompanied by Martin Longden, Chargé d'Affaires of the UK Mission to Afghanistan in Doha.
