The Perinatal Centre in Bokhtar was inaugurated on October 27th, 2021 by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Ambassador of Germany in Tajikistan Dr. Andreas Prothmann and Regional Director of KfW Dr. Andreas Schneider. This is the second perinatal centre financed by KfW in the Khatlon region. The first centre was inaugurated in Kulob in September of 2019.
The reconstruction, rehabilitation and modernization of the Bokhtar Perinatal Centre has been financed by the German Government via the German Development Bank -KfW in the amount of over €7,6 million and has been implemented by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The Perinatal Centre is located alongside the Oblast clinical hospital of Khatlon named after Buri Vohidov. The new centre is organized as a referral hospital for mothers, newborn and children and is designated to provide effective diagnostic and outpatient services to the population of Bokhtar city and its surrounding districts. The project resulted in the construction of a new three-story building consisting of 10 different departments with additional rehabilitation, reconstruction and modernization of adjacent amenities surrounding the hospital.
The hospital has been equipped with modern and high-quality equipment for diagnostic and treatment such as digital x-ray, ultrasound machines, newborn incubators, breathing equipment for children and adults and cutting-edge equipment for surgery, including endovideo surgical system. The design and construction of the buildings includes modern energy-efficient technology and building materials to minimize heat loss in the cold winters and to provide sufficient lighting and comfort for the end users.
The project, parallel to the investment measure, contains an accompanying measure which entails provision of training to the staff of the hospital on the use of clinical equipment, hospital management, waste management, building and equipment maintenance by qualified international specialists. Additionally, twinning arrangements are developed with high profile institutes in Germany for trainings and exchange of knowledge and experience.
It is important to note that KfW has been active in the health sector in Tajikistan since 2003 and has been implementing programs of the Financial Cooperation of Germany with Tajikistan in the fields of mother and child health/emergency care, tuberculosis control and treatment and prevention of poliomyelitis in the amount up to EUR 70 million over the last 18 years.
