Tajikistan’s 2022 budget earmarks about 2.3 billion somonis for power-wielding structures

Asia-Plus

The Ministry of Justice has published for the first time expenditures the country’s 2022 budget projects totaling for defense, law enforcement agencies and courts.

The text of The RT Law “On the National Budget for 2022” posted on the Justice Ministry’s official website says Tajikistan’s 2022 budget projects expenditure of about 2.3 billion somonis (equivalent to about 205 million U.S. dollars) for defense, law enforcement agencies and courts, which is more than 6.8 percent of the budget.

In past years, the country’s law on the budget had just noted that expenditures for these purposes “are not for publication.”

Meanwhile, the RT Law “On State Secrets” does not prohibit the publication of aggregated expenditures ensuring security of the country.

Under the RT Law “On State Secrets”, only separate items of the national budget concerning troop costs are classified as confidential.

However, international partners of Tajikistan for development every year receive the text of the country’s law on national budget with these figures.

Moreover, Military Strength Ranking publishes Tajikistan’s expenditures on defense annually.  Thus, Tajikistan last year reportedly earmarked 79 million U.S. dollars for defense.

This amount was significant given Tajikistan regularly receives grant military and technical assistance from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) partners, first of all, Russia and Kazakhstan.
