UAE’s Masdar to build three large solar farms in Uzbekistan

Asia-Plus

Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company Masdar is expected to introduce three  solar photovoltaic (PV) plants with a total capacity of 1,096.6 megawatt (MW) into operation in Uzbekistan by the end of 2023.

Fergana news says a solar PV plant with capacity of 456.6 MW will be built in Sherabad district of Surkhandarya region and two solar PV plants with capacity of 220 MW each will be built in Gallaaral district of Jizakh region and Kattakurgan district of Samarkand region.

One more solar PV plant with capacity of 200 MW will be built by Phanes Energy Holding B.V. (the Nethereland) in Nourata district of Navoi region.

Besides, Uzbekistan will receive additional capacity of 2,264 MW due to modernization of two thermal power plants located in Navoi and Talimarjan and the Tashkent-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

In addition two units with capacity of 32 MW each will be introduced into operation at the Tashkent CHP plant in 2023, two combined cycle plants with a total capacity of 900 MW are expected to be introduced into operation at the Talimarjan thermal power plant in 2024, and two combined cycle plants with a total capacity of 1,300 MW will be introduced into operation at the Navoi thermal power plant in 2025.

The first solar PV project plant with capacity of 100 MW was introduced put into operation in Uzbekistan in August 2021.  This solar photovoltaic (PV) project inaugurated by Masdar has the capacity to power 31,000 households.

A photovoltaic power plant, also known as a solar park, solar farm, or solar power plant, is a large-scale grid-connected photovoltaic power system (PV system) designed for the supply of merchant power.  They are differentiated from most building-mounted and other decentralized solar power because they supply power at the utility level, rather than to a local user or users.  The generic expression utility-scale solar is sometimes used to describe this type of project.

The solar power source is via photovoltaic modules that convert light directly to electricity. However, this differs from, and should not be confused with concentrated solar power, the other large-scale solar generation technology, which uses heat to drive a variety of conventional generator systems. Both approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages, but to date, for a variety of reasons, photovoltaic technology has seen much wider use in the field.

Photovoltaic solar energy is obtained by converting sunlight into electricity using a technology based on the photoelectric effect. It is a type of renewable, inexhaustible and non-polluting energy that can be produced in installations ranging from small generators for self-consumption to large photovoltaic plants

Masdar is a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable urban development. Over the past decade, the company has reportedly pioneered commercially viable solutions in clean energy, sustainable real estate and clean technology in the UAE and around the world.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, Masdar develops renewable energy projects, realizes low-carbon urban development and advances clean-tech innovation.  It also delivers world-class knowledge and industry platforms.
