Tajikistan and Uzbekistan intend to launch joint ventures in the field of silkworm breeding

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are considering the possibility of launching joint ventures in the field of silkworm breeding    

The Tajik state-run news agency Khovar says Tajikistan is studying Uzbekistan’s experience in the field of sericulture, cocoon processing, production of silk fabrics and design. 

A Tajik delegation consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies and private enterprises companies reportedly arrived in Uzbekistan on February 7.

During the visit that will last until February 11, the delegation will a number of sericulture enterprises in Tashkent, Margelan and Ferghana.  

To-date, the delegation has reportedly visited an exemplary mulberry garden and an exhibition of raw materials, finished fabrics and designer clothes. 

The delegation members are also studying the process of state support, the system of taxation, sales market, production process, selection and use of patterns on fabrics, attraction of designers, and export of finished products.

The parties have also considered the possibility of launching joint ventures in the field of silkworm breeding, cocoon processing and production of silk fabrics, Khovar added.

Meanwhile, silkworm breeding has gone into decline in Tajikistan over the past thirty years.  Over the reporting period, production of silkworm cocoons has fallen in the country 12 times: from 4,528 tons in 1991 to 387 tons in 2021.
