Tajikistan overfulfills its tax collection target, but tax debts rise

Date:

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, the head of the Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, Nusratullo Davlatzoda, noted on July 14 that a total volume of taxes and other mandatory payments collected in Tajikistan over the first six months of this year has amounted to 7,280,000 somonis, which is 1.8 percent or 130,000 somonis more than it was originally planned.

“The tax collection target has been overfulfilled.  We can't say for sure what it's about yet, but could not be ruled out that entrepreneurs began to come out of the shadows.  In any case, a survey will be conducted on how the new Tax Code affected.  Only six months have passed since it was introduced, this time is not yet enough to draw any conclusions.  But we plan to complete this survey by the end of the year,” Davlatzoda said.

At the same time, Tajik chief tax officer noted that tax debs have increased by 196.5 million somonis in six months to June 30, 2022, reaching 1,002,900.000 somonis.

According to him, the most incorrigible tax dodgers are:

  1. OJSC Sangtudinskaya GES-1, which operates the Sangtuda-1 hydropower plant – 244.6 million somonis;
  2. OJSC NBO Roghun – 55.8 million somonis;
  3. OJSC Tajik Telecom (Tajikistan’s state-owned national telecommunications operator) – 123.3 million somonis.

These three companies have reportedly accounted for 43 percent of Tajikistan’s total volume of tax debts.

Davlatzoda did not say the reasons for the delay in tax payments, just noting that OJSC Sangtudinskaya GES-1\s tax debts should be paid by Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national power utility company).
