Over the first six months of this year, Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan have amounted to 51.2 million U.S. dollars, which is 38 percent more than in the same period last year, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.
A two-way trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in January-June this year has valued at US$52.7 million. This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan estimated at US$51.2 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Afghanistan worth US$1.5 million.
In January-June last year under the former government of Afghanistan, Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan were estimated at little more than US$37.2 million, which was 3.0 percent fewer than in the same period 2020.
Electricity remains the major item of Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan.
According to data from the Agency for Statistics, Tajikistan in January-June this year supplied about US$44.9 million worth of electricity to Afghanistan, which is 87.7 percent of the overall volume of Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan over the reporting period.
An official source within the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan (MoEWR) says Afghanistan accounts for about 92 percent of Tajikistan’s electricity exports.
Tajikistan also supplies electricity to neighboring Uzbekistan.
