Russian Security Council secretary says Central Asia is under the threat of terrorists’ invasion

Date:

The 10th meeting of Secretaries of the Security Councils of the CIS member nations took place in Moscow on November 3.

Media reports say the meeting participants discussed relevant matters of international and regional security, including the development of the situation in the post-Soviet space in light of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.

The counteraction of destructive activities of foreign non-governmental organizations, the glorification of fascism and the falsification of history in the CIS member nations were also discussed.

The parties reportedly also exchanged views on problems of ensuring nuclear security and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

TASS reports that in statement delivered at the meeting, Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, in particular, noted that the CIS member nations are at risk of facing increase the number of Afghan refugees, among whom there will be also representatives of various terrorist organizations.

He drew attention to the fact that there is high risk of serious deterioration of the migration situation against the backcloth of economic crisis in Afghanistan.

Thus, after the Taliban's recapture of power in 2021 began a massive outflow of Afghans abroad, Patrushev noted.

At the same time, there is a risk that the refugees will move not only to Iran and Pakistan but also to Central Asia’s nations, he said, noting that among other things, this may lead to the infiltration of members of international terrorist organizations into our countries.

Patrushev further added that difficult socioeconomic situation in that country, “including against the backdrop of blockage by Americans of Afghan assets”, creates conditions for capacity building of terrorist organizations that is fraught with growing instability within the CIS area.
