Tajik president, Russian foreign intelligence service director discuss security issues

On Tuesday, November 22, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia, who arrived in Tajikistan on a working visit, according to the Tajik president’s official website. 

Within the framework of a strategic partnership, the parties reportedly discussed a number of issues related to providing security.  

A special attention was given to the issue of cooperation between special services of the two countries. 

They reportedly stressed the importance of further strengthening of interaction in jointly combating terrorism, extremism and transnational organized crime, including trafficking in drugs and weapons, cybercrime and other threats to national security.  

Rahmon and Naryshkin reportedly also discussed further coordination of actions against existing threats related to the spread of the religious radicalism ideology.  

The parties also discussed a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest, including the current situation in Afghanistan. 

Sergey Naryshkin (born October 27, 1954) is a Russian politician and businessman who has served as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service since 2016.  Previously, he was Chairman of the State Duma (2011–2016) and Kremlin Chief of Staff (2008–2012); he was also chairman of the Historical Truth Commission in May 2009 until it was dissolved in February 2012.

Sergei Naryshkin was born in Leningrad and graduated from Leningrad Institute of Mechanics with a degree in engineering in 1978, and, in 1978, he was the first secretary of its Komsomol which was the Communist Party's youth wing.  From 1978, Naryshkin studied at the Moscow Higher School of the KGB for two years in the French section.  In the 1990s he also graduated from International Management Institute of Saint Petersburg with a degree in economics.
