Outgoing US ambassador meets with Tajik foreign minister

Outgoing United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Tajikistan John Mark Pommersheim yesterday met with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin at the end of his tenure to the Republic of Tajikistan. 

The Tajik MFA information department says the parties discussed state and prospects of further expansion of the bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States in the fields of politics, Muhriddin reportedly expressed gratitude to Ambassador Pommersheim for his contribution to strengthening friendly relations between Tajikistan and the United States.

Ambassador John Mark Pommersheim was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan on January 9, 2019 and sworn in on February 22, 2019.  Before that, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission (2015-2018) at the U.S. Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan.  Prior to Kazakhstan, he served as Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs where he was responsible for managing the full spectrum of U.S. relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.  In his Foreign Service career, he has served in a wide array of positions in Washington DC and worked in Embassy political sections in Japan, China, Belarus, and Germany.  He served also as U.S. Consul General in Vladivostok, Russia.

Recall, U.S. President Joe Biden on June 22 nominated Mr. Manuel P. Micaller, Jr. as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Tajikistan.        

Mr. Micaller is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, rank of Minister- Counselor.  He is currently serving as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal.

He was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 2016 to 2019.  Previously, he was Deputy Director of the Office of India Affairs in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA); Political-Economic Section Chief, then Acting Deputy Chief of Mission in Dushanbe, Tajikistan; Senior Economic Officer in the SCA Office of Regional Affairs, and Deputy Chief of the Economic Section in Rabat, Morocco.  He has served in the Department of State’s Operations Center and Executive Secretariat Staff; Moscow, Russia; and Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.  He also worked for Tyco International as an Executive Council on Diplomacy Lawrence S. Eagleburger Fellow.

Mr. Micaller has a B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University, an MBA from George Washington University, and is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College, with an MS in National Security Strategy.  He speaks Russian and Tajik Farsi.
