Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan finalizes the border delimitation process

Asia-Plus

Media reports say Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have finalized the border delimitation process.

A protocol on the exchange of resolutions to ratify November agreements on delimitation of several disputed segments of Kyrgyzstan’s common border with Uzbekistan was signed on January 27, the last day of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s two-day state visit to Kyrgyzstan.

According to Interfax, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said after narrow-format talks with his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Friday that they are finalizing the process of the delimitation of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek state border.

“It is a truly historic event," Japarov said, noting that Kyrgyzstan invariably attaches significant importance to developing cooperation with Uzbekistan.

The final demarcation of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border was expected to be successfully concluded after three decades of negotiations in October last year, but instead of celebration, the agreement spurred domestic unrest and intensified repression in Kyrgyzstan.

The unrest was due to the Kempir-Abad water reservoir in the Uzgen district.  More than 20 Kyrgyz politicians and activists were arrested after they protested the border deal.
