Some agricultural goods in Tajikistan have increased in cost on average by 51.5 percent in a year to June 23, 2023.
The increase in cost was caused by 3-fold rise in prices for carrots (from 2.00 somonis per kilogram on June 23, 2022 to 6.00 somonis on June 23, 2023), 2-fold rise in prices for plums (from 2.50 somonis to 5.00 somonis), sweet cherries — by 50 percent (from 20.00 somonis to 30.00 somonis), milk – by 33.3 percent (from 6.00 to 8.00 somonis per liter), peaches – by 25 percent (from 8.00 somonis to 10,00 somonis), eggplants – by 20 percent (from 6.00 somonis to 7.00 somonis), tomatoes – by 20 percent (from 5.00 somonis to 6.00 somonis), potatoes – by 18 percent (from 5,.50 somonis to 6.5 somonis), and rice – by 17.6 percent (from 15.30 somonis to 18.00 somonis).
Meanwhile, over the reporting period there was a reduction of prices of some food products: eggs – 40 percent (from 42.00 somonis per 30 pieces on June 23, 2022 to 30.00 somonis per 30 pieces on June 23, 2023), cucumbers – by 33.3 percent (from 8.00 somonis per kilogram to 6.00 somonis per kilogram), vegetable oil – by 25 percent (from 20.00 somonis per liter to 16.00 somonis per liter), wheat flour grade I– by 23.4 percent (from 20.00 somonis per kilogram to 16.00 somonis per kilogram), onions – by 14.3 percent (from 4.00 somonis to 3.50 somonis).
Prices for other vegetables and fruits are about the same as last year.
Producers say there will be no increase in prices for the Idi Qurbon (Eid al-Adha) holiday on their part, while merchants can raise prices taking advantage of the increased demand for products during the holiday days.
Meanwhile, some farmers say heat, water scarcity, rising labor costs and rise in prices for agricultural machinery and transport services can affect prices for agricultural goods this year. Labor cost has reportedly risen twice – from 50.00 somonis per day to 100.00 somonis per day.
