JICA President Tanaka Akihito gave a lecture at the National University of Tajikistan

Press release

Since 2019, through the Japanese Studies Program, the JICA office representative has been sharing Japanese experience in the field of economic and social development with higher education institutions in more than 70 countries.

On September 2, JICA President Dr. Tanaka Akihiko delivered a lecture on "International relations in a Complex Crisis: a Japanese perspective" at the Tajik National University.

The lecture was attended by more than 200 students and teachers of the Tajik university, as well as diplomats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the beginning of the event, the university administration awarded Tanaka Akihito the title of honorary doctor and presented a commemorative medal.

This is the third time that the JICA representative office in Tajikistan holds lectures. It was first held at the same university on December 7, 2022. For the second time, the event was organized jointly with the Tajik State University of Finance and Economics on March 13-14, 2023.

In both cases, lectures on the development of education in Japan, industrial development of Japan and Japanese management were given by Japanese professors such as Dr. Kayashima and Dr. Funabashi.

JICA began its technical cooperation with Tajikistan in 1993 by inviting Tajik civil servants to study in Japan in order to gain knowledge and experience in public administration and macroeconomic development. As of the beginning of 2023, the total number of participants in the JICA Joint Knowledge Creation Program, previously called "Training Courses", exceeded 2,550 people. In 2006, a JICA office was opened in Tajikistan, and since that time, various grant and technical assistance projects have been dynamically implemented in such sectors as agriculture and rural development, drinking water supply, healthcare, transport, energy, capacity building, as well as the promotion of small and medium-sized businesses.

Currently, JICA's project portfolio in Tajikistan consists of 49 projects totaling more than 427.44 million US dollars (97.2 million US dollars of technical assistance and 330.2 million dollars of grant assistance), of which 12 projects are operational.
