Tajikistan expected to host CSTO military exercise this year

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan is expected to host the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) war game, dubbed Rubezh 2024 (Frontier 2024).

Russian Colonel-General Andrey Serdyukov, who heads the CSTO Joint Staff, noted this yesterday at a briefing on the subject of the main tasks of joint training of command and control bodies and formations of forces and means of the SCTO collective security system for 2024.

Representatives of press services of defense ministries and mass media of the CSTO member nations participated in the event via videoconference.

The exercises, involving the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Forces, Collective Rapid Reaction Forces of the Central Asian region, CSTO Peacekeeping Forces, forces and means of logistics, intelligence, and management bodies, are expected to be conducted in September-October this year.

Speaking at the briefing, Russian general noted that several events of joint training will be conducted this year in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

According to him, the exercise for CSTO Peacekeeping Forces, dubbed The Indestructible Brotherhood-2024, will be conducted in Kazakhstan.

Kyrgyzstan will host the SCTO military exercises, dubbed Interaction 2024 for CSTO Rapid Reaction Forces, Search 2024 for the CSTO intelligence forces, and Echelon 2024 for the CSTO logistics forces and means.

The war game for the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Forces of the Central Asian region, dubbed Frontier-2024, will be conducted in the territory of Tajikistan, Serdyukov noted.

Recall, Tajikistan in 2022 hosted the CSTO war game, dubbed Rubezh 2022 (Frontier 2022).  The war game that took place at the Harbmaidon training ground in Tajikistan’s southern Khatlon province from October 10 to October 21 involved about 1000 military personnel along with more than 300 pieces of military hardware, including SU-25 fighters, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The Collective Rapid Reaction Force (CRRF) is a joint combined arms task force comprising independent military units from the CSTO member nations.

CRRF currently comprises following units: Russia — 98th Guards Airborne Division (Ivanovo) and 31st Guards Air Assault Brigade (Ulyanovsk); Kazakhstan — 37th Separate Air Assault Brigade (Taldykorgan) and Marine forces battalion; Belarus — Spetsnaz brigade; Armenia — infantry battalion; Kyrgyzstan — infantry battalion; and Tajikistan — infantry battalion.  The total strength of CRRF is reportedly more than 17,000 servicemen.

The first joint exercises of CRRF were held in October 2009 at Matybulak firing range in Kazakhstan near the border with China.

Founded in 1992, the Collective Security Treaty Organization is a Russia-led military alliance currently grouping the six former Soviet republics of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
