Emomali Rahmon meets with Iran’s acting president in Tehran

Asia-Plus

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has had meeting with Iran’s acting President Mohammad Mokhber in Tehran.  The meeting took place in Tehran yesterday as high-ranking state officials from different countries were in the Iranian capital to pay tribute to the late President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on May 19.

The Tajik president’s official website says the parties reportedly emphasized the importance of both sides' commitment to stable continuation and further expansion of friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran.

Meanwhile, IRNA reports that in the course of the talks, Mohammad Mokhber said that the expansion of relations with Islamic, neighboring, and like-minded countries is among the main achievements of the martyred president.

IRNA further said that the Tajik president, for his part, said that the late President Raisi was a skilled president who will never be forgotten by the people and government of Tajikistan.

Mohammad Mokhber is Iran’s interim president now after late President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials were confirmed killed in a helicopter crash and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei approved his accession to the role.

Mokhber was appointed first vice president by Raisi in August 2021, shortly after Raisi took office.

He is the seventh person to serve in that role since the revision of the constitution in 1989 – and one of the most influential.

According to Iran's constitution, upon the president's death, the first vice president assumes temporary leadership. Together with the judiciary chief and the parliament speaker, they hold a new presidential election within 50 days.

Mokhber will remain interim president until then.
