Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod oblast suspends issuance of work permits to migrants

Date:

The Department Overseeing Migration Issues of the Nizhny Novgorod Police Directorate says that starting October 1, Nizhny Novgorod oblast in Russia has suspended the issuance of work permits to foreign nationals.  The suspension is reportedly based on Russian Interior Ministry’s order No. 1/11198, issued on September 23 of this year.

Meanwhile, the Department Overseeing Migration Issues noted that it will reissue work permits for those migrants who already obtained them and will continue to provide public services.

It's also important to note that since April 2024, migrants in Nizhny Novgorod have been banned from working as taxi drivers.

Kommersant-Privozhye noted that over the first seven months of 2024, the number of incoming migrants to the Nizhny Novgorod region has decreased by 24%, to 61,000 people, 62% of whom were labor migrants.

Previously, several Russian regions imposed restrictions on migrant workers in specific sectors, such as trade, transportation, tourism, and education. Such measures have been implemented in 23 regions of Russia.

Starting January 1, 2025, foreigners will no longer be able to work in the food service industry, stores selling alcohol and tobacco, or in social services, including sports, culture, leisure, healthcare, and education, in the Moscow region.
