Prime Ministers of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan Discuss Border Issues

Asia-Plus

On Wednesday January 8, the prime ministers of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan held a trilateral meeting to discuss state border issues, the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers says.

The meeting reportedly took place at the junction of the three countries' borders: Batken Region (Kyrgyzstan), Fergana Region (Uzbekistan), and Sughd Province (Tajikistan).

The negotiations were led by Adylbek Kasymaliev (Kyrgyzstan), Abdulla Aripov (Uzbekistan), and Qohir Rasoulzoda (Tajikistan).

The talks followed earlier agreements reached by the countries' leaders, Sadyr Japarov, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and Emomali Rahmon.

Key points from the meeting:

  • The process of delimiting the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border was completed, with ratification documents exchanged on January 27, 2023.
  • The December 4, 2024 agreement on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border emphasized the importance of finalizing descriptions of the remaining sections.  Working groups were tasked with preparing final documents promptly.

Opportunities for collaboration

The meeting also highlighted the significant potential for increased cooperation in areas such as trade, logistics, water-energy resources, and cultural-humanitarian ties. Cross-border and interregional collaboration were noted as critical components of partnership.

In December 2024, government delegations from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan completed the description of the remaining sections of their common border.
