As of January 1, 2025, the total domestic tax arrears in Tajikistan amounted to 740.2 million somonis (around US$68 million), Nusratullo Davlatzoda, the Chairman of the Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, told reporters in Dushanbe on February 13.
He noted that compared to the start of 2024, the outstanding tax arrears decreased by 65.4 million somonis.
"Despite the creation of favorable conditions for entrepreneurship, the improvement of state services in electronic form, and the simplification of tax obligations, some business entities still violate the law," said Davlatzoda, the country’s chief tax official.
He also reported that in 2024, the Tax Committee identified 20,500 instances of tax law violations, with the total amount of administrative fines reaching 409 million somonis.
Largest tax defaulters named
Davlatzoda revealed the largest tax debtors responsible for nearly half of the total tax arrears. These entities include:
- OJSC Distribution Networks – 177 million somonis;
- Enterprises under the Agency for Irrigation and Land Reclamation – 81 million somonis;
- Public Utilities Enterprises – 18.6 million somonis;
- OJSC Sangtuda-1 Hydropower Plant – 26 million somonis;
- Fon-Yaghnob Coal Mine – 11 million somonis;
- OJSC Angisht – 11 million somonis.
Business activity and taxpayer data
According to the Tax Committee, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs contained 365,300 business entities as of January 1, 2025, which represents an increase of 15,000 (or 4.3%) compared to the start of 2024.
