Tajikistan to build the longest road bridge in Central Asia

Asia-Plus

The Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan and the Chinese company, Zhejiang Communications Construction Group Co. Ltd, have signed a contract for the construction of the longest road bridge in Central Asia, the press center of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan (MoT) says.

The total project cost is 427.5 million yuan (approximately US$59.8 million).

Under the agreement, the bridge will be built as part of the third phase of the Obigarm-Nourobod road project.  The bridge itself will be 920 meters long, and with the approach roads, its total length will reach 1.5 kilometers.  It will be constructed over the Surkhob River in the Nourobod district.

The construction is scheduled to be completed within 4 years, with the involvement of experienced specialists from both Tajikistan and abroad.  However, as noted by the Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, there is a possibility of completing the project ahead of schedule.

A representative of Zhejiang Communications Construction Group Co. Ltd, Li Minkun, reportedly stated that the company has been working in Tajikistan for several years and has extensive experience in road and bridge construction projects.

Obigarm–Nourobod road is the section of M41 Highway to replace the existing segment that will be submerged by the Roghun dam reservoir.

The Tajikistan: Obigarm-Nourobod Road Project–Long Bridge and Approach Roads (Project) aims to improve connectivity along the Obigarm–Nourobod section of M41 Highway by constructing a long bridge and its approaches.

The M41 Highway, known informally and more commonly as the Pamir Highway, is a road traversing the Pamir Mountains through Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with a length of over 1,200 kilometers.

Zhejiang Communications Construction Group Co. Ltd is a Chinese state-owned corporation operating as an engineering construction contractor.  The company provides highway subgrade construction, pavement construction, bridge construction, tunnel construction, municipal engineering and other contracting services.  Zhejiang Communications Construction Group also operates as import and export business.

The company reportedly operates in 139 countries and has implemented many large-scale projects, including the design, construction, and equipping of 7 out of the 10 largest ports by cargo turnover in the world, as well as the longest bridges in the world.  Notable achievements include the construction of the world’s longest sea bridge, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge (36 km), and the largest lock gates for the Port of Antwerp in Belgium.
