Presidents Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan have signed the State Border Treaty between the two countries. This historic event took place in Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek, on March 13 during Rahmon’s state visit to Kyrgyzstan, according to the Tajik president’s official website.
“Today, we are making a historic decision on border issues between our countries,” Rahmon stated at the beginning of the talks. He emphasized that the agreement will lay a solid foundation for strengthening interstate relations.
Japarov, for his part, highlighted the productive work of government commissions on the delimitation and demarcation of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border.
Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov also signed the Joint Statement on further strengthening of friendship and good-neighborliness
The high-level meetings and negotiations in Bishkek culminated in signing several agreements and memoranda of understanding in the presence of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Kyrgyz counterpart Sadyr Japarov.
The signed documents include:
- A government-to-government agreement on access to water and energy facilities
- An agreement on road construction and maintenance, including the development of road intersections.
- An agreement on agricultural cooperation between the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan.
- A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in earthquake-resistant construction and green technologies between the Kyrgyz Ministry of Construction and the Tajik Committee for Architecture and Construction.
- A MoU on industrial and new technology cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Industry of Tajikistan.
- A MoU on cooperation between "KyrgyzExpo" and the Tajik Export Agency.
- A cooperation program in youth policy (2025-2027) between the Ministry of Culture of Kyrgyzstan and the Tajik Committee for Youth and Sports.
- A sports cooperation program (2025-2027) between the Kyrgyz State Agency for Physical Culture and Sports and the Tajik Committee for Youth and Sports.
- A sister-city agreement between Bishkek and Dushanbe.
- A trade, economic, and cultural cooperation agreement (2025-2027) between Chon-Alai District of Osh Region (Kyrgyzstan) and Lakhsh District (Tajikistan).
- A trade and cultural cooperation program (2025-2030) between Osh Region (Kyrgyzstan) and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Tajikistan).
- A protocol on customs data exchange regarding the movement of goods and transport between the two countries.
- A MoU on financial oversight and anti-money laundering cooperation between the Ministries of Finance of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
- A MoU on cooperation between Kyrgyzstan’s State Enterprise Kyrgyzexport and Tajikistan’s Export Development Agency.
The State Border Treaty marks a major milestone in resolving long-standing disputes between the two nations. Both leaders expressed confidence that these agreements will strengthen security, economic development, and regional stability, ensuring peaceful cooperation for years to come.
