Asia-Plus

As of April 18, 2025, only 17 participants of the Great Patriotic War remain in Tajikistan, according to the Republican Council of War and Labor Veterans,
according to the Council, last year there were 24 veterans.

The majority of the war veterans currently reside in Khatlon province — 8 people, in Sughd province — 2, in Dushanbe — 2, and in districts subordinate to the center (RRP) — 5 people.

The oldest participant of the war is Rashid Karimov, who lives in the village of Shohambary in the city of Hisor, and he will turn 113 years old this year.  According to him, he was born on May 9, 1912.

Aziz Qodirov, a resident of Shahritous, celebrated his 103rd birthday this year, while Safar Ali Fayzaliyev from Bokhtar will celebrate his 102nd birthday on May 9.

Mukhtor Zargarov from Dushanbe will turn 101 on April 29, and Gulmurod Taghoyev from Abdurakhmoni-Jomi district will celebrate his 101st birthday on May 1.

Another war veteran, Nozim Nosirov, a resident of the village of Navobod in Devashtich district, will also mark his 101st birthday this year.

According to the Republican Council of War and Labor Veterans, as of April 14, 134 rear-area workers from the Great Patriotic War are still alive in the country.

What events will take place for Victory Day

This year, on May 8 and 9, various festive and ceremonial events will be held in cities and regions across Tajikistan to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory.

Shavkat Mirzoyev, the Chairman of the Union of Veterans-Internationalists (Soviet-Afghan war veterans) of Tajikistan, told Asia-Plus that the wreath-laying ceremony for Victory Day will take place on May 8 at the Victory Park in Dushanbe, with the participation of the country’s president, Emomali Rahmon.

"On May 9, the 'Immortal Regiment' march will also take place.  Everyone is welcome to gather by 8:30 AM near the Sadriiddin Ayni Opera and Ballet Theater.  At 9:00, we will march from the '800th Anniversary of Moscow' Square toward Victory Park," said Mirzoyev.

Every year, on May 9 and June 22, Tajikistan honors the participants of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.

It is still unknown how much will be allocated to veterans this year.

Last year, on the occasion of Victory Day, each veteran received about 50,000 somonis from the republican and local budgets.

Specifically, President Emomali Rahmon allocated 40,000 somonis to each veteran.  The heads of Dushanbe, Sughd, and Khatlon regions additionally provided between 5,000 to 10,000 somonis to veterans living in their regions.

It is worth remembering that about 300,000 people from Tajikistan were sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War, and of them, 92,000 either died or went missing.

In 2005, the number of WWII veterans in Tajikistan was 9,900.  By 2020, that number had decreased to 168, in 2021 to 98, in 2022 to 59, in 2023 to 42, and in 2024 to 24.
