Abnormal heat and worsening air quality expected in Tajikistan

Asia-Plus

From May 15 to 17, abnormal heat is expected in the valleys of Khatlon province, districts subordinate to the center (RRP), and Sughd province, according to Tajikistan’s Hydrometeorology Agency (Hydromet).

According to meteorologists, the air temperature will rise from +34°C–+39°C to +37°C–+42°C — levels that are atypical for May.

From May 17 to 19, Dushanbe, Khatlon, and other regions are forecast to experience a deterioration in air quality due to a dust storm coming from the southwest and northwest.

In this regard, the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan strongly recommends that citizens reduce their time spent outdoors during the day, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  The Emergencies Committee also advises people to avoid going outside unnecessarily, to drink more water and juice, and for those with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, or diabetes to monitor their health closely and carry necessary medications.  Parents are urged not to leave children unattended, especially near bodies of water.

Abnormally warm spring

Spring 2025 has been unusually warm, something that has not gone unnoticed by residents of the country. Many observed that typical May flowers—lilacs, peonies, and others—had already bloomed in April.  And plants that usually flower by the end of May bloomed in mid-May, as if summer had come early.

Asia-Plus sought comment from the Hydromet.  The head of the weather forecasting department, Manzoura Jumakhonova, confirmed that March and April of this year were indeed abnormally warm, especially in valley areas.  Average temperatures during these months exceeded long-term climate norms by 2 to 4 degrees.  According to forecasts, the hot weather will continue into May.

"This year, temperatures in March and April were indeed higher than usual. May continues this trend," Jumakhonova noted.

According to her, in March the average temperature in the valleys was +10°C to +13°C, while the norm is +7°C to +10°C.  Despite brief cold spells and precipitation, the monthly average was 1–3 degrees above normal.

April also brought genuinely summer-like weather: in the valleys, temperatures reached +18°C to +22°C, compared to the usual +15°C to +18°C. Particularly warm weather was observed in the southern districts of Khatlon province, where on certain days temperatures rose to +38°C.

Thus, April temperatures exceeded the climate norm by 2–4 degrees.  Experts emphasize that such early warming and the near-total absence of precipitation in April led to rapid warming of the air and soil. This triggered the premature awakening of nature and abnormally early blooming of plants.
