Asia-Plus

President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan held high-level meetings with key United Nations officials during their visit to Dushanbe for the First International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

On May 29, President Rahmon welcomed Amina Mohammed, the UN’s First Deputy Secretary-General, to discuss deepening cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations.  The talks focused on joint efforts in addressing water and climate challenges, areas where Tajikistan has actively promoted initiatives gaining strong international backing.

Highlighting the importance of the upcoming high-level conference on glaciers, Rahmon underlined Tajikistan’s commitment to working closely with UN agencies to promote global peace and stability.  The discussions also covered Tajikistan’s collaborative initiative with France aimed at adopting a UN General Assembly resolution establishing the “Decade of Cryospheric Sciences.”

Later the same day, the Tajik leader met with Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).  Rahmon praised the UN’s role in advancing Tajikistan’s development, particularly through ESCAP’s efforts in infrastructure, sustainable energy, agriculture, and job creation.

Both sides focused on pressing global issues such as climate change and water management, as well as the adoption of a Tajik-backed resolution to strengthen regional cooperation on these challenges in Asia-Pacific. The conversation also touched upon key projects including green bonds, paperless cross-border trade, energy financing, digital innovation, and green transportation initiatives.

As a landlocked country, Tajikistan expressed appreciation for ESCAP’s programs supporting regional logistics centers and attracting direct investments vital to its economic growth.

The meetings mark a continuation of Tajikistan’s active role in international cooperation on environmental and socio-economic issues, reinforcing its strategic partnership with the United Nations.
