President of Tajikistan highlights development progress in GBAO ahead of Independence Day

Asia-Plus

During a working visit to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), President Emomali Rahmon announced significant progress in the region’s socio-economic development.  During the visit, which took place from June 25 to 28, he inaugurated a number of economic and social facilities in the region, according to the president’s official website.

The head of state, in particular, highlighted development progress in the region.  Emomali Rahmon reportedly noted this during an address to a meeting of regional administrators in GBAO’s capital, Khorog on June 28.

The president noted that dozens of new infrastructure projects — including roads, bridges, and industrial and social facilities — have been commissioned in the region on the eve of the 35th anniversary of national independence,

Key projects include a new bridge over the Ghunt River, asphalted road sections, a meat processing facility, and numerous schools, hospitals, and sports facilities.

In recent years, over 2,300 socio-economic sites have reportedly been built in the region with investments exceeding 25 billion somonis.

The president highlighted steady growth in industry, energy, agriculture, and education.  Since independence, GBAO's electricity generation capacity has grown from 10.4 to 47.5 megawatts, with 100% of its power coming from renewable sources.

The newly launched Sebzor hydropower plant (11 MW) and solar plants in remote areas are expected to enhance the region’s energy supply.

Rahmon noted that the region is becoming increasingly attractive for tourism — in 2024, 40,000 tourists visited GBAO, 13 times more than in 2021.

Educational and healthcare programs, including those under the presidential quota, are also being actively implemented.

Regional authorities have been instructed to accelerate the implementation of investment and industrial projects, advance the digital economy, expand lending, and support entrepreneurship.

According to the president, continued support for GBAO remains a priority for the Government.
