Over the first half of 2025, Tajikistan has successfully brought 343 hectares of abandoned farmland back into agricultural use, with 330 hectares classified as irrigated land. The reclaimed plots have been officially returned to the category of arable land, according to a report presented at a mid-year meeting of the State Committee for Land Management and Geodesy of Tajikistan.
The Committee officials highlighted that the ongoing land rehabilitation efforts are contributing to national food security and the sustainable development of rural areas. These changes were formalized in a government resolution dated March 28, 2025 (No. 224), titled “On the report concerning existing lands, their classification by category, type, and user across the republic.”
As of the beginning of this year, Tajikistan had 18,701 hectares of fallow land, including 16,228 hectares of irrigated areas—more than 85% of the total—which are considered suitable for agricultural cultivation, according to official statistics.
During the meeting, officials emphasized the need to strengthen land use oversight, improve monitoring of the land fund, and adopt modern land management techniques in response to climate-related challenges. Special attention was given to adapting the land-use system to current economic and environmental conditions.
Following the discussions, the committee leadership and its regional branches were instructed to continue systematically reintegrating unused plots into active agricultural use. They were also tasked with ensuring strict control over the rational use of land and enhancing interagency cooperation to achieve sustainable outcomes.
