Tourism in Tajikistan reportedly booming in 2025: visitor numbers soar by over 30%

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan is rapidly gaining popularity among international travelers, with tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025 surging by 31.3% compared to the same period last year, according to the Committee for Tourism Development, under the Government of Tajikistan.

Over the first six months of this year, the country has reportedly welcomed 925,700 foreign nationals, of whom 762,300 entered Tajikistan for tourism purposes.  The majority of visitors came from Uzbekistan, followed by Russia and Kyrgyzstan, the Committee reported during a news conference on August 1.

"Of the total foreign arrivals, 850,600—or 91.9%—came from CIS countries, while 75,100 tourists, or 8.1%, arrived from non-CIS destinations," said Rustam Kholmatiyon, First Deputy Chairman of the Tourism Committee.

A striking statistic came from Kyrgyzstan: 48,275 Kyrgyz citizens visited Tajikistan as tourists in the first half of 2025, compared to just 2,096 during the same period in 2024—an increase of more than 2,200%.

Tourism accounted for 3.5% of Tajikistan's GDP in 2024, with travelers from over 186 countries visiting annually.

How much do tourists spend in Tajikistan?

Asked about tourist spending, officials cited data from the Agency on Statistics.  According to a survey conducted by the Research Institute of the International University of Tourism and Entrepreneurship of Tajikistan, the average visitor spends around US$300 during their stay.

“In 2024, Tajikistan hosted 1.4 million tourists.  Multiplied by average spending that translates to 4 somonis in total tourist expenditures” said the Committee's First Deputy Chairman.

The survey is conducted at airports, border crossings, and through tourism companies to determine average expenses by country of origin.

Tajikistan continues to strengthen global partnerships in tourism.  To date, the country has signed 30 international cooperation agreements with countries and organizations including the UAE, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, Qatar, Kuwait, Italy, China, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and Diplomatic World magazine.
