Rahmon discusses Ukraine talks with Putin, congratulates Aliyev and Pashinyan on peace declaration

Asia-Plus

On Sunday, August 10, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss bilateral relations, international issues, and ongoing negotiations over the conflict in Ukraine, the Tajik president’s official website reported.

Putin briefed Rahmon on the results of Russia’s dialogue with the United States, including a recent conversation with U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Witkoff, and confirmed plans for an upcoming meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska on August 15.

The Putin–Trump talks in Alaska are expected to focus primarily on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the Kremlin, Rahmon expressed support for efforts aimed at a long-term settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

The two leaders reportedly reaffirmed their readiness to expand the Tajik–Russian strategic partnership and discussed the schedule for future high-level contacts.

A day earlier, Rahmon sent congratulatory messages to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the signing of a joint declaration to settle the long-standing dispute between their countries.

“We welcome this historic event and stress the importance of peaceful dialogue as the only means to resolve crises and conflicts.  We are confident that the agreements reached will lay the groundwork for good-neighborly relations and partnership between the two states, strengthen stability and security in the Caucasus, and expand constructive interregional cooperation,” Rahmon wrote.

The declaration, signed in Washington on August 8 by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States, paves the way for the signing and ratification of a fully agreed peace treaty between the two South Caucasus nations.
