Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have agreed on the operation of energy systems for the coming winter

Date:

The Ministers of Energy of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan discussed the coordination of energy systems in the upcoming winter period and the progress of the project "Reconnection to the unified energy System of Central Asia."

A working meeting between the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, and the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov, took place in Guliston, Sughd region. The meeting was attended by the heads and specialists of the fuel and energy companies of the two countries.

The parties stressed that the bilateral cooperation initiated by presidents Emomali Rahmon and Shavkat Mirziyoyev is developing dynamically and covers all areas, including energy. Special attention was paid to the issues of coordinating the work of energy systems in the autumnwinter period of 2025-2026, as well as technical aspects of the implementation of the project "Reconnection to the unified energy System of Central Asia".

Following the talks, the Ministers expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation and confirmed their readiness to further strengthen fraternal and strategic relations in the interests of the peoples of the two states.

Visit to the Bahri Tojik reservoir

After the meeting, the heads of the energy departments visited the Bahri Tojik reservoir (Tajik Sea). It was noted that this facility is of strategic importance: it provides irrigation for farmland in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and also serves as the main source of water for the Kairokkum HPP.

The hydroelectric power plant makes a significant contribution to the energy supply of economic and social facilities in Sughd region. In addition, the coastal area of the reservoir, due to its picturesque landscapes and recreational potential, has become a popular vacation destination for tourists from Tajikistan and abroad.

About the project of reconnection to the Central Asian unified energy system

The project aims to fully restore and connect Tajikistan's electric power system to the Central Asian energy system through interconnections with Uzbekistan. Its implementation will ensure a stable exchange of electricity between the countries of the region, optimize the balance of generation and consumption, as well as increase the reliability of energy supply during peak periods.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a grant of $15 million to finance these works. The project is expected to strengthen regional energy cooperation, increase the efficiency of hydro and thermal generation, and promote the economic integration of Central Asian countries.

The creation of a single energy ring will allow Tajikistan to export excess electricity in the summer and import it in the winter months, when domestic consumption increases, which is especially important in the context of climate challenges and growing demand for energy resources.
