Gallup ranks Tajikistan among the world’s safest countries

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan has been named one of the safest countries in the world, according to the 2025 Global Safety Report published by U.S. polling company Gallup.  The survey ranked Tajikistan second worldwide, with 95% of respondents saying they feel safe in their communities. Only Singapore scored higher, at 98%.

The report, based on interviews with over 145,000 adults in 144 countries, asked participants about personal safety, trust in law enforcement, and experiences of theft or assault.  Gallup noted that Tajikistan not only placed second overall but also achieved the highest score globally in the Law and Order Index, with 97 out of 100 points.

Key findings for Tajikistan included:

  • 95% feel safe walking alone at night;
  • 80% trust the police;
  • Only 1% reported being assaulted in the past year;
  • Just 3% experienced theft.

Gallup highlighted that Tajikistan has consistently scored above 90% since 2018, calling its 2024 results “the country’s strongest to date.”

A global paradox

Worldwide, 73% of adults said they feel safe walking alone at night — the highest figure since Gallup began measuring nearly two decades ago.  Yet the results come at a time of heightened conflict, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, extremism in Africa’s Sahel region, and unrest across Asia and Latin America.

Gallup CEO Jon Clifton described this as a paradox: “We are living through the highest number of armed conflicts since World War II.  And yet, people across the globe are reporting stronger feelings of safety than ever before.  This sense of security, rooted in trust and community, is not just a reflection of peace — it’s what makes peace possible.”

Globally, the average safety index stood at 83 points in 2024, ranging from Tajikistan’s 97 to Liberia’s 49.  While some regions saw improvements, Gallup noted a persistent gender gap: in 104 countries, women reported feeling significantly less safe than men.

Regional context

Interestingly, Tajikistan’s neighbors in Central Asia did not appear on either list — neither among the safest countries, nor among those where people feel least secure.
