Tajikistan and Russia advance uranium site cleanup and peaceful nuclear cooperation

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan and Russia are strengthening their partnership in the field of nuclear energy, with a focus on the cleanup of uranium legacy sites and expanding cooperation in peaceful nuclear technologies.

These issues were central to high-level talks held between Sherali Kabir, Tajikistan’s Minister of Industry and New Technologies, and Nikolay Spassky, Deputy Director General of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, in Dushanbe on October 1.

According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MoINT), the discussions covered a range of topics including the rehabilitation of areas affected by past uranium mining activities, collaborative projects in healthcare, and the broader use of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes.

The meeting followed agreements made between the presidents of Tajikistan and Russia, Emomali Rahmon and Vladimir Putin, aiming to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the nuclear sphere.

In May 2025, Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda announced during a visit to Moscow that the country plans to establish a nuclear medicine center.  Speaking with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Rasoulzoda confirmed that a detailed roadmap for the project had already been approved by Tajikistan’s relevant agencies and Rosatom, outlining its phased implementation.
