German-funded central district hospital opens in Khatlon’s Temurmalik district

Asia-Plus

The newly renovated Central District Hospital in Temurmalik district, located in the Khatlon province of Tajikistan, was officially inaugurated on October 2. The ceremony, held online, was led by Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and marks a major step forward in improving healthcare services, especially for mothers and children in the region.

Press release issued by the German Development Bank (KfW) says this hospital is a key part of the Mother and Child Health Program, a collaborative project between the Government of Tajikistan and the Government of Germany, funded through KfW.  The project, implemented by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan, aims to enhance the quality of medical care in the region.

The hospital’s transformation was made possible by a significant investment of 41 million EUR, part of the Phase II-V Mother and Child Health/Emergency Care initiative.  The funding supported the complete renovation of the facility, equipping it with advanced medical technologies and specialized equipment to ensure high-quality emergency and maternal care.

The renovated hospital provides a wide range of services, including Pregnancy Pathology Rehabilitation, Gynecology, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), dedicated Emergency and Admission Departments, and a fully-equipped Diagnostic Department.

In addition to healthcare improvements, Phase II-V also focused on upgrading the hospital’s infrastructure.  This includes the installation of modern water systems, wastewater treatment, efficient heating, and a comprehensive waste management system, all designed to meet the hospital’s operational needs.

To ensure long-term success, the project emphasized capacity building, offering training for both national and international experts in clinical services, hospital management, budgeting, telemedicine, and waste management.  These efforts are aimed at ensuring the facility is operated by a highly skilled team, maximizing its impact on the health of the Temurmalik district and neighboring regions.

This new hospital marks the continuation of the long-standing partnership between Germany and Tajikistan.  Since 2003, KfW has invested more than 100 million EUR in Tajikistan’s health sector, supporting a variety of programs focused on maternity and child health, emergency care, and the prevention of diseases like tuberculosis and polio.
