Russia remains one of Tajikistan’s major economic partners, maintaining strong trade, investment, and humanitarian ties. According to the latest data, bilateral trade between the two countries continues to be a key pillar of their relationship.
The Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan notes that over the first eight months of this year, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Russia has valued at US$1.44 billion, accounting for 21.4% of Tajikistan’s total foreign trade turnover. This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to the Russian Federation estimated at US$73 million, or 4.5% of total exports, while Tajikistan’s imports from Russia worth US1.368 billion, making up 26.8% of Tajikistan’s overall imports.
Over the same eight-month period, Russia ranked as Tajikistan’s second-largest trading partner, following China, which recorded a bilateral trade volume of US$1.658 billion.
In 2024, the bilateral trade between the two nations reportedly valued at US$1.981 billion, representing 22.1% of Tajikistan’s foreign trade turnover. That year, Tajik exports to Russia totaled US$96 million, while imports from Russia reached US$1.885 billion.
In 2024, Russia held the top spot in Tajikistan’s trade rankings.
Investment
As of mid-2025, the total volume of Russian investments in Tajikistan’s economy stood at nearly US$2 billion, with approximately US$1 billion of that categorized as direct investments. Russia ranks as the second-largest investor in Tajikistan after China.
China’s cumulative investments amounted to US$5.1 billion, including US$2.9 billion in direct investments (57.4%) and US$2.2 billion in other forms of investment (42.6%).
Humanitarian Aid
Over the first eight months of 2025, Russia provided Tajikistan with around US$2.3 million in humanitarian aid. However, Russia trailed behind several other major donors: China (US$11.8 million), the United States (US$4.9 million), and the Netherlands (US$3.7 million).
In 2024, Russia’s humanitarian assistance reached approximately US$8 million, placing it behind China (US$37 million), the United States (US$17 million), and Kazakhstan (US$15 million) in terms of aid volume.
Remittances from Russia
Labor migration remains a major component of the Russia–Tajikistan relationship.
Russia has been and continues to be the main destination for labor migration from Tajikistan, though other countries like Kazakhstan and South Korea also receive Tajik migrants. Remittances from labor migrants are a critical component of the Tajik economy, helping families and mitigating the impact of limited domestic job creation.
According to World Bank data, remittances to Tajikistan from abroad totaled US$5.8 billion in 2024. Roughly 90% of these transfers are estimated to have come from Russia — meaning remittances from Russia likely exceeded US$5 billion.
Estimates suggest that between 1 and 2 million Tajik labor migrants currently live and work in Russia, highlighting the deep socio-economic interdependence between the two countries.
