On October 22, 2025, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan's Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, and Iran's Minister of Energy, Abbas Aliabadi, held discussions on the upcoming meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission between the two countries. The meeting, which will focus on trade-economic, technical, scientific, and cultural cooperation, is scheduled to take place in Dushanbe.
The talks occurred on the sidelines of the Fifth Session of the Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water Resources.
According to the Tajik Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR)'s press service, both sides exchanged views on a range of bilateral cooperation issues and reviewed the progress of the protocol signed during the 17th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission in May 2025 in Shiraz, Iran. The implementation of the protocol was assessed positively by both parties.
Tajik Energy Minister Juma expressed satisfaction with the operations of the Sangtuda-2 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), which reportedly provides about 4–5% of Tajikistan's total electricity output. He highlighted the plant as a prime example of successful cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran in the energy sector.
The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of energy and water resources. They also addressed topics discussed at the Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water Resources.

In addition to his meeting with Minister Aliabadi, Daler Juma participated in the session of the Islamic Conference. He emphasized the importance of the event, noting that it symbolizes unity, dialogue, and shared goals among participating countries. He also underscored Tajikistan’s leadership role in advancing the global water and climate agenda, which has been supported by the United Nations.
"Tajikistan places great importance on transitioning to a green economy, which is one of our national strategic objectives and a key element of our long-term development vision," Juma stated. "Today, more than 98% of our electricity is generated through hydropower, and we are committed to achieving 100% renewable energy production by 2032," he added.
Both ministers expressed optimism about further strengthening ties between their countries, with a focus on energy and water resources.
