Citizens at the forefront of Tajikistan’s clean energy shift were celebrated at the third edition of the EU–Tajikistan Sustainable Energy Days, held yesterday in Dushanbe, according to press release issued by the EU delegation to Tajikistan. The event underscored the human stories powering the country’s green transition and included a photo exhibition and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony.
The event, supported by the European Union, brought together representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, the Renewable Energy Association of Tajikistan, the EU Delegation to Tajikistan, students, and featured individuals from the photo exhibition titled "The European Union – Tajikistan: Faces of Sustainable Energy Development Cooperation."
The exhibition showcased Tajik citizens—policymakers, researchers, engineers, and educators—who are actively contributing to a cleaner energy future. Their stories were complemented by a digital regional exhibit featuring 38 portraits from all five Central Asian nations, offering a powerful glimpse into the shared commitment to sustainability across the region.
“More than 98% of Tajikistan’s electricity comes from hydropower. Our goal is to achieve a full transition to green energy by 2037,” said Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Manouchehr Safarzoda at the opening ceremony. “For us, this transition isn’t just technical—it’s about the people who make it possible. With strong policy, education, and innovation, we’re building a cleaner, more sustainable Tajikistan, and we’re grateful for the EU’s partnership.”
Following the exhibition, attendees took part in a greening initiative at the Novaya substation, planting trees in support of Tajikistan’s “Green Country” strategy and the State Program for Greening the Republic of Tajikistan (until 2040).
The event also aligned with the EU's #ForOurPlanet campaign, promoting greener cities, cleaner air, and climate resilience.
“This exhibition is a tribute to shared values and a sustainable future,” said EU Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mr. Radosław Darski. “It reflects our strong and lasting partnership with Tajikistan. The individuals featured in these portraits remind us that every step counts—from policy changes to planting a single tree. Together, we can shape a better, greener tomorrow.”
The EU–Tajikistan Sustainable Energy Days were organized through the EU-funded SECCA project (Sustainable Energy Connectivity in Central Asia), which runs from March 2022 to March 2026. The project aims to foster a sustainable energy mix across Central Asia in line with EU best practices, improve the policy environment, and raise awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
This initiative is part of the wider EU–Central Asia Sustainable Energy Days campaign, aligned with the global edition of EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW)—Europe’s largest annual event dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency, launched by the European Commission in 2007.
