“Attack aimed to create tension”: Taliban and Pakistan respond to deadly incident on Afghan–Tajik Border

Asia-Plus

The Taliban authorities in Afghanistan have condemned a recent deadly attack on Tajik territory that resulted in the deaths of three Chinese nationals. According to Afghan media, the Taliban's Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended condolences to the governments of China and Tajikistan, as well as to the victims’ families.

The ministry stated that the attack was likely carried out by groups seeking to “create tension and distrust among countries in the region.” However, no specific organization was named.

The Taliban expressed their readiness to cooperate with Tajikistan in identifying those responsible, sharing information, and conducting a joint investigation.

Pakistan condemns the attack and warns of rising threat

Pakistan also condemned the incident in strong terms. Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, called the attack “cowardly,” “terrorist in nature,” and a “serious threat” emanating from Afghan territory, in a post on social media platform X.

Sadiq noted that the use of armed drones in the incident indicates both the level of threat and the boldness of the perpetrators operating from Afghanistan.

He emphasized that Pakistan, as a neighboring country that has “repeatedly fallen victim to terrorist attacks planned from Afghan soil,” understands the grief and suffering experienced by Tajikistan and China, and stands in solidarity with them.

“The continued use of Afghan territory by terrorist groups and their shelter under the Taliban regime is a matter of serious concern for the entire region and the international community,” he wrote.

Sadiq concluded that the only way to address the growing threat is through “practical action against the perpetrators, their enablers, sponsors, and financiers operating from Afghan territory.”

As it had been reported earlier, the Islamic republic of Iran has also condemned the incident. In a message released on November 28, Ismaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, condemned the terrorist attack in the Shamsiddin-Shohin district of Tajikistan’s Khatlon province. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and declared solidarity with the governments of Tajikistan and China. The spokesman emphasized the principled stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran in firmly condemning all forms and manifestations of terrorism and stressed the necessity of strengthening multilateral cooperation to prevent and counter terrorism.

As it had been reported earlier, Three Chinese citizens working for a private gold-mining company, Shohin SM, were killed in an armed attack from Afghanistan into Tajikistan on the night of November 26, 2025.

Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on November 27 that the assault targeted a compound belonging to Shohin SM operating in the Shamsiddin Shohin district along the Tajik–Afghan frontier.
